Greeting Message

Hello, everyone. I am Seiichi Maruyama, a surgeon conducting microtia surgeries with Dr. Satoru Nagata.
Here as a greeting message, I would like to tell about the relationship with Dr. Nagata rather than about microtia surgeries. Nearly 15 years have passed since I met Dr. Nagata at the meeting in Kobe. At that time, I worked for OMC (Osaka Medical College Hospital), Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. At the meeting in Kobe, I made a presentation about mictoria treatment. The presentation itself took 5 minutes, during of which, probably in the first few minutes of the presentation, I found a doctor who sat at the front and was about to stand up as if he tried to attack me. During the entire presentation, I was concerned about this doctor. As soon as or right before the presentation was over, he stood up and launched a verbal attack (not questions) against my presentation about microtia treatment, which lasted longer than my presentation time. I still remember vividly that the principal doctor tried to stop him in the middle of his verbal attack by saying “would you stop for now… .” Since I was a person who hated to lose and was competitive, I looked for him there in order to give him my complaint and a piece of my mind in response to the attack. I found him smoking in the lobby and then rushed toward him. This is how I met Dr. Nagata for the first time. In the lobby, I received a long lecture from him, which made me decide to visit him at the clinic to observe the surgeries conducted by him. I took a leave from OMC work and visited him, where I saw well-reconstructed auricles with no compromise and even with dignity I felt.
The auricles reconstructed by Dr. Nagata are still far superior to the ones done by other institutes, I think, though nearly 15 years have passed since we first met. Microtia surgery is one of the most difficult plastic surgeries since the form of auricle is complicated to reconstruct and thus the artistic sense is also required. As a specialist of plastic surgery/ aesthetic plastic surgery, I myself engage in the microtia surgery. I do think this technique is not supposed to be obsolete. Dr. Nagata becomes mellower with age, however, due to his spirit of professionalism, he might be difficult to approach for patients and their families. Then, this is the time you can ask me, since I understand him better than anyone.
